Milan inaugurated a new space dedicated to inclusive sport: Campi Guaineri, a concrete example of how architecture can generate value for the community. The redevelopment project, designed by the Milanese firm Vudafieri-Saverino Partners, gives quality and identity back to two public spaces where sport, sociability and inclusion meet.

The work, carried out for the association YouSport inside the “Istituto Comprensivo Rinnovata Pizzigoni” in Zone 8 of Milan, dealt with the redevelopment of a five-a-side football pitch and a multipurpose field. Architects Tiziano Vudafieri and Claudio Saverino described the project as “sober, but distinctive”, showing that “even a small project can have a real impact if it is carefully designed”.

The core of the project is the enclosure, conceived as a real architectural factor. This perimeter element evokes YouSport’s colours and visual identity, thus becoming “an urban brand”. It is also an expression of the quality and attention deserved by the places dedicated to sport inclusion. Moreover, a new design of spaces, bleachers and perimeter elements was introduced.

The Campi facility is dedicated to the memory of Roberta Guaineri, former Sport Assessor of the Municipality of Milan and it will be available to students and citizens as well. YouSport, the promoter of the venture together with the joint support of companies and foundations, turned “an idea into a common good: lively open places, accessible to everybody”, with the aim of making sport a tool for change. The management will be entrusted to an entity of the third sector, thus giving birth to a model of virtuous collaboration between public and private.
