What does it mean when they say follow the fil rouge?
The exhibit promoted by the Noroo Pantone Color Institute at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul is called Red Light Architecture. Sketches and notes by Ico Migliore. Today, 16 November, it is possible to take a look at some of the designs of the Migliore+Servetto Architects firm through a series of original sketches by Ico Migliore.
A collection of 20 design sketches, 20 visions in which red is both the background colour and protagonist. In fact, within a red backdrop, visitors can explore the relation between light, shadow, and full and empty spaces underlying the design process by following a path within the more creative and intimate dimension of the architect, in which light is not yet understood as the design subject that has always characterised the projects of the firm, but is used as a perceptive means between the real and represented space.
The result is a timeless setting that expresses the crystallization of a moment in which architecture emerges strongly, transfigured by a red filter through which light digs, like a blade to define volumes and routes.
In this sense, it is a polyphonic light, generated from different points, in which both natural and artificial light flow to reveal the objects, as explained by Ico Migliore,
“A timeless and interior-exterior beyond the boundaries of time that allows me to express the project. The colour red envelops the architecture or design, and transfigures it to interact with the light element”.
In this vision, red is perceived as a generator of the architect's poetics and key elements. It is a colour that talks of heat, energy, dynamism, movement and, above all, attraction, a colour that becomes a condition of opportunity that is needed to disclose all the others.
Moreover, the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) is a privileged setting for another event closely related to the project activity of the Migliore+Servetto Architects firm. In fact, the Architect Ico Migliore takes part with his intervention Light is only red and yellow at the Noroo Intl Color Trend Show, an international conference that is also promoted by the Noroo Pantone Color Institute.
Together with Mara Servetto, he is the co-founder of the Migliore+Servetto Architects firm of Milan that has received numerous international awards and has created projects and stands for the most important museums and institutions in the world (the MOT in Tokyo, the LACMA in Los Angeles, the Kulturforum in Berlin, and the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities of Torino, just to name a few). Ico Migliore teaches interior design and fittings at the Polytechnic University of Milan, and is visiting professor at the Tokyo Zokei University.
His is a vision of architecture, to keep in mind to better tune in on trends and inspirations that will influence the design of tomorrow.
