Back to school: Thonet presents the S 43 K children’s chair

September is here, and with the return to school, the importance of creating stimulating and safe environments for our children is rekindled. In this context, Thonet‘s S 43 K children’s chair proves to be the ideal choice, combining timeless design with a particular focus on sustainability and the well-being of the little ones.

An icon of design, the S 43 cantilever chair, created by Mart Stam in 1931, revolutionized the concept of seating and established itself with its minimalism and timeless formal language. Thonet, with a tradition of children’s furniture since 1860, has scaled it down into a mini version, perfect for children’s rooms.

In 2021, Studio Besau Marguerre curated the new color concept for the S 43 K. The five shades – amber yellow, ruby red, coral agate, cobalt blue, and emerald green – inspired by minerals, convey calm and natural warmth, ideal for a study environment.

With a seat height of 34 cm, the chair is designed for safety: surfaces are resistant to saliva and sweat (DIN 3160-1, 53160-2) and comply with the DIN EN 71-3 standard for toy safety. This attention reflects Thonet’s vision, which since 1819 has produced furniture designed to last for generations, with an emphasis on efficient resource use and the possibility of being revitalized.

Norbert Ruf, Creative Director at Thonet, recalls how the Bauhaus, an inspiration for the S 43, included children as the “generation of the future” in a “socially relevant outlook on life”. Choosing the S 43 K for the return to school means choosing a piece of historical design that supports growth and learning in a functional, safe, and sustainable environment.
