Macrocosmos, Alessandro Zambelli’s science fiction design

Science fiction design. Recently, the public is rediscovering its fascination for the extra-terrestrial, moving from the futuristic apocalypse of Blade Runner 2049 to the monstrous subtler of the Netflix TV series Stranger Things, and design masters are also choosing to follow the wave of science fiction by using its fascination and forms.

Even Alessandro Zambelli is using this for his new Macrocosmos collection. This first line of furniture accessories wholly conceived, designed and made by the designer using a 3D printing printer with FDM technology and embellished with coloured ergal and brass details. The collection officially inaugurates the foundation of Alessandro Zambelli Edizioni, the new brand conceived by the designer and dedicated to design experiments and the creation of a limited edition of objects and accessories.

An inspiration that ironically intersects the animal, vegetable and human world. At the origin of this almost alchemical line, the designer mixes the geometric perfection of the (micro) animal world under a magnifying glass with lively vibrant colours of the plant world. Zambelli explains the line like this:

“Macrocosmos comes from my desire to give a contemporary feel to a particular production that - until a few decades ago - characterised the small town in which I live, still known today as the "land of toys" for the large presence of doll and toy factories. Therefore, I wanted to rediscover that almost unrealistic astonishment I felt as a child when I saw the stacks of wooden crates filled with toys portions to be assembled, reinterpreting it through my adult eyes. This is how the first collection of objects created by assembling shapes, colours and various materials came about”.

Macrocosmos currently contains a series of 8 different elements for the combined mix of shapes, colours, and sizes. It is a composite collection of vases and containers designed like small domestic but at the same time iconic and emotional presences that reveal an unmistakable abstractionism made of bright, vivid materiality, whimsical and vibrant colours, sharp lines, and precious iridescent elements.

The ironic and playful macrocosm that dwells in faraway galaxies can be previewed and purchased from the LUISAVIAROMA online shop.
