After three editions dedicated to the urban architecture of the new millennium, in 2023 the Architecture Photography Prize promoted by Matrix4Design in collaboration with URBAN Photo Awards evolves: this year the photographers’ focus is no longer on New Buildings but on the Icons of Architecture, the iconic buildings that have contributed to writing the history of architecture.
Milestones of design, structures created to influence the very idea of built space, buildings capable of generating new scenarios and redesigning the imaginary: this is what it means to be Icons of Architecture, a definition that is well suited to the 30 works of architecture protagonists of the shots selected in this year’s Top 30 of the Prize, finally unveiled.
This is how Andrea Boni, juror of URBAN Photo Awards and founder of the magazine Matrix4Design, explained the motivations on the basis of which the shortlist was defined from more than 200 photos that participated in the competition:
“The selected photographs are distinguished by their ability to capture the relationship between architecture and space by enhancing the unique characteristics of the portrayed buildings through unprecedented and original perspectives. The photographer’s gaze enhances the architectural work and fully restores its iconic identity.”
But the journey of the Prize does not end here. The ten finalist images will be announced in September, and in October they will be exhibited in Milan as part of an exhibition at the CRISTINA Brera showroom; the exhibition will be part of the calendar of the Milano Photofestival 2023. In addition, a selection of the best Icons of Architecture photos will be published in the URBAN unveils – Vol. 09, which will contain the best of the 2023 Contest.
The winning photo will be exhibited and awarded in Trieste at the final exhibition of URBAN Photo Awards, scheduled for later this month also in the context of Trieste Photo Days.
Moreover, the author of the winning shot will be featured in an exclusive interview on Matrix4Design, will receive a €500 Amazon voucher, and will be hosted for 2 nights in Trieste during the Trieste Photo Days, to attend the Contest awards ceremony.
