Renzo Piano Building Workshop has been chosen by BEEAH, the sustainability pioneer in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region, to design the Jawaher Boston Medical District in Sharjah, UAE. The vision is to integrate the local context, culture and ecosystem into an open, cohesive and sustainable state of the art infrastructure.

Developed to bring world-class healthcare to residents of Sharjah and the UAE, this highly anticipated hospital facility is characterized by transparency and connection to the environment, and unified by an ambition to provide patients and staff with a peaceful and calming environment.

Nature will play a fundamental and therapeutic role in the design. A tree-filled park will define the site, and the hospital will be profoundly receptive to its surroundings, designed to be welcoming, luminous and transparent, offering generous views of the park.

Another key element of the site will be a large canopy, covering the hospital and fitted with photovoltaic panels that will provide renewable energy and solar shading for the buildings below.

The park will be designed with a variety of local and adapted tree species, and multi-layered plantings will create clearings, oases, orchards and groves under the canopy. This diverse ecosystem aims to enhance microclimatic performance.
