Salone del Mobile 2018, all the latest news about Milan Design Week

-

Emotion, enterprise, quality, design, networking, young people, communication, culture, Milan.

Nine words, nine values, nine pillars for Salone del Mobile.Milano 2018, which presents its first Manifesto to condense and underscore its strong points and its connections with the city, in a bid to carry forward the process of internationalisation that both have embraced, and to flag up design concepts to the design community for imminent use.

However, emotion is the first word, because Salone is enthusiasm, initiative and positivity first and foremost, a system of connections, creativity and innovation, a global experience that attracts creative people, innovative people, people who produce and people who buy, professionals who are directly involved with the sector as well as people from outside the design business, all over the world.

Within the space of a week, more than three hundred thousand people converge on Milan: entrepreneurs, journalists, collectors, intellectuals, critics, designers, architects, creatives, purveyors of knowledge and nurturers of beauty. Everyone wants to be in Milan, everyone wants to be a protagonist.

The Salone del Mobile’s success resides in the indefatigable industrial network that underpins it. It is a manufacturing system driven by the interface between business people from small and large companies on one hand and designers and architects on the other, working together to create and project excellence. We now need to up our game to overcome the global challenge, we need to focus on innovation and sustainable quality, on our talent for creating a system and culture, on our willingness to share information and valorise the new generations”, said Claudio Luti, President of the Salone del Mobile. “This is why the Salone also keeps evolving and consolidating its links with Milan. The first Manifesto is a commitment to continue to strive to do better and is an invitation to Milan, the city at the centre of it all, where it all first began, to keep networking and growing together, to keep building on the centripetal and attractive power of the Salone and consolidate the city’s role as ‘the place to be’ for leading brands, their projects and their human and financial resources.

The 57th edition of the Salone del Mobile at Fiera Milano Rho from 17th to 22nd April, promises to be a new starting point, represented by the Manifesto: it is not just an affectionate gesture towards the city and all the actors that have contributed to its success, but is first and foremost a declaration of intent, laying the foundations for a new way of thinking, working as a system and designing, aiming for sustainable quality, collaboration, inclusion and sharing, valorising young talent and the cultural heritage.

In addition, this year, the 22st edition of EuroCucina will swing into action: it is the sector’s most important and influential appointment, a forum for interface and discussion for leading Italian and foreign companies within the sector and a unique opportunity to scope the latest trends for the most convivial space in modern living; it will be accompanied by FTK (Technology For the Kitchen), its natural complement, providing an extraordinary overview of technology, of what has already been produced and what is to come in the built-in domestic appliance sector.

Moreover, the International Bathroom Exhibition is today an expanding and dynamic exhibition: the 7th edition will see 228 exhibitors ranged over 20,600 square metres, a larger-than-ever exhibition area which will showcase the best of the international manufacturing, from furniture and accessories to shower cubicles and saunas, sanitaryware and radiators, coverings, taps, bathtubs and hot tubs.

Finally, SaloneSatellite 2018: this year marks the 21st edition of the world’s leading event for talented young designers, an edition for reflecting on the future of design, right from its origins, and for exploring the delicate balance between craftsmanship and the new technologies.

With the theme assigned to this year’s young designers, Africa / Latin America: Rising Design – Design Emergente, SaloneSatellite is putting the spotlight firmly on the Southern Hemisphere, where Africa and Latin America are two huge melting pots of creativity and design; there will be also an exhibition on the wealth of design in both continents: the Latin American part will be curated by brothers Humberto and Fernando Campana, designers who have been active for some time in the social rehabilitation of marginalised people, and the African part by the Franco-Moroccan designer Hicham Lahlou, founder of the Africa Design Award & Days, committed to promoting up-and-coming generations of African creatives.

In conclusion, the upcoming edition promises to be packed with visitors and projects: more than 205,000 sqm of net exhibition space and over 2,000 exhibitors – including 650 SaloneSatellite designers – 22% of them are foreign companies

Big numbers but also big surprises, such as the exhibition-installation created by the architect Carlo Ratti in the heart of the city and inspired by the four seasons, that will trigger reflection on tomorrow’s living and on how to relate the design of an interior space to the nature of the external space.

Stay tuned.
