An Abimis steel kitchen for Haus M-M in Austria

-

Haus M-M is the name of a detached house in Kirchdorf an der Krems, in northern Austria, renovated and extended by Illichmann Architecture. A triplex building covering 225 square meters, the house dates back to the late 1800s but bears the signs of the recent intervention, mainly aimed at reorganising the layout, adding the attic floor, new balconies and a large wooden barn.

Almost every part of the interior has been renovated with a clearly contemporary layout but historical remnants make their mark on the interior, telling the story of the house through its rooms. Some parts of the wood and ceramic floor, antiques and modern items, but also renovated wooden frames interact with the new neutral-toned architecture, without stepping on each other’s toes, in an authentic narrative.

The kitchen is no exception, in this case being placed exactly where there was a non-load-bearing wall, which was knocked down to create the large airy space. Traces of the change are preserved on the floor, half in parquet and half in original ceramic. The large central island, made of steel, creates a sharp contrast of material and attracts the observer’s attention, taking over the space. It is an Ego model by Abimis, completely made to measure, without any visible joins and following the quality standards of professional catering.

The island, in orbitally polished steel, is a pure and uniform volume. It is equipped with handles that have a soft elongated shape typical of the Ego collection, made of the same material as the structure and integrating the top without any joins. The cooking area is located here, topped by an extractor hood also made by Abimis and equipped with thin linear LEDs. It follows the monolithic block in size and finish. This is marked by drawers and doors, with their characteristic rounded corners and their unusual 50s-inspired aesthetics, while the retracted skirting board softens the design even further.

On the wall, the wood-crafted bases and columns have white lacquered fronts set into the architecture, almost disappearing into it, fully supporting the Ego central island. All the surfaces are slightly reflective and interact with the lighting. In addition to the LED tracks, the two windows and the large mirrored back wall contribute to flooding the room with light, creating an ethereal atmosphere.

Haus M-M is a cultured design where past and present live happily side by side. For this reason it has been awarded the BIG See Interior Design Award 2024, selected from various residential designs in Austria.
